Rabies Control Program
The Environmental Health Unit receives and investigates reports of animal bites to humans in order to control exposure to known or suspected rabid animals. We work closely with nurses from the Community Health Unit and physicians in order to properly and expeditiously advise victims on proper treatment options.
Owners of animals that have attacked or bitten a person are contacted and sent a Notice of Confinement. Animals are checked for signs of rabies by Unit staff after 10 days. If the animal shows no signs of disease, it is released from quarantine. Individuals bitten by wild animals or strays are referred to their physicians to determine if rabies treatment is appropriate.
Most municipalities in Atlantic County have ordinances requiring licensing of dogs and sometimes cats. The ordinances require owner to have proof of current rabies shots for their pets. Many municipalities hold rabies clinics during the year. Please contact your municipal clerk for more information. The Atlantic County Animal Shelter located at 240 Old Turnpike Road in Pleasantville holds a rabies clinic every month.
