Recreational Bathing (Pools & Spas) Inspection Program
The Environmental Health Unit inspects public recreational bathing places:
- swimming pools
- wading pools
- hot tubs
- spas
- aquatic recreational facilities
- bathing beaches
The Unit reviews design plans for new or altered swimming pools, wading pools, hot tubs and spas.
Indoor facilities are inspected twice per year and seasonal facilities are inspected at least once per year. A recreational bathing area may be closed by the health authority if there is s need to abate a hazard or threat to public health, like physical safety hazards or failure to meet water quality standards.
Requirements for pool owners and operators
The New Jersey Public Recreational Bathing Code can be found under Forms and Documents.
All pool owners, operators or trained pool operators are required to complete a a yearly checklist according to N.J.A.C. 8:26-2.5b.
A checklist (listed below under Forms and Documents) is required for EACH swimming pool, wading pool, hot tub and/or spa and is submitted annually to this office. For SEASONAL pools, the checklist must be submitted 21 days before the bathing facility is scheduled to open.
