Flu (Influenza) Information
The influenza virus, or "flu", infects the respiratory tract (nose, throat, lungs) and spreads when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks and the virus is sent into the air. Influenza causes severe illness and life-threatening complications resulting in an estimated 36,000 deaths and 200,000 hospitalizations each year in the US.
Protect yourself with a flu shot every year. Getting vaccinated can reduce flu illnesses, doctor visits, missed work and school, prevent hospitalization, and death.
In addition to the recommended yearly flu shot, you can help stop the spread of germs: Cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces, avoid close contact with persons who are sick, and stay home when you are sick.
